5 knots that will impress even the most hardcore campers

When preparing for a camping trip, you know that you can’t forget to bring your backpack, shelter, sleeping bag, food, and water.  But what else do you need?  One piece of gear often left at home, but extremely useful, is a good rope.  Rope is useful, but if you don’t know some good knots to tie, it won’t do you much good.  Tying a knot can be the difference between waking up in the morning and cooking a hot breakfast or finding that a bear has taken off with your food in the middle of the night!  Knots can be used for various applications while camping and learning some basic ones is a great idea before you head out.

If you’re looking to set up a tent or hammock with a guy line between two trees, the taut-line hitch knot is a great choice.  It is mostly used when the length of the rope will need to be adjusted to maintain tension after you’ve strung out your line.  In cases like hanging a shelter, the weight it will constantly pull downwards.  The taut-line hitch allows you to periodically adjust the tension, ensuring that your shelter won’t collapse around you during the middle of the night.  Additionally, it’s an easy knot to learn, having only four steps.

Another important knot while out camping is the bowline knot.  It is often used for climbing, but for camping is used to tie down equipment at the end of the day.  The bowline knot has a reputation for being tight and not slipping, but it’s still an extremely simple knot to learn.  It even has a mnemonic device about a rabbit leaving his hole, running around a tree, and going back into the hole that makes it easy to memorize.  If you’re looking to teach a knot to a younger camper, this would be a great choice.

A less used knot, but still important while out camping, is the monkey’s fist.  It is a unique knot in that it isn’t used in ways other knots traditionally are.  Instead of stringing up gear or bear bags, the monkey’s fist is used as a weight.  Find a heavy object, usually a rock, and tie the monkey’s fist around it.  Once the object is secure inside of the knot, simply throw your knot wherever you need.  It’s usually used as a counterweight for bear bags, but can also be used to throw across a river to another person to provide a safe crossing.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you don’t have the luxury of time to secure your gear, the simple backpacker hitch knot is a great choice.  Simply wrap the end of a rope around an object three times tightly, then twice loosely, and then pull the end of the rope through the loose loops before tightening.  It holds great but is still easy to untie.

The square knot is another great knot that you shouldn’t overlook before heading outdoors.  The last thing you want while outdoors is finding your rope isn’t long enough.  The square knot can remedy this situation, provided you have two shorter ropes on you instead of one long one.  In short, the square knot (or sometimes called the reef knot) is used to tie two ropes together.  It is easy to tie and untie, yet remains very secure.  Other uses include tying the ends of a single rope together to create a handle, perfect for carrying around trash or sticks for a fire.

These five knots all have their uses while camping.  You won’t use them every time you go out, but you can never be too prepared. If you have any suggestions on knots you would recommend learning out in the field then mention them in the comments below. As always if you found this content useful make sure to like and share it with your friends.

Love the Outdoors enough to Ink your Skin?

I’m a huge fan of the outdoors, in fact I could happily live in the outdoors day and night. I am also a big fan of tattoo’s. At the moment I only have one and it really isn’t anything to show off, but after seeing a few of these amazing tattoo’s combining the 2 things I love I might even consider getting another one.

What better way to show off the things that make you whole then by immortalizing it on your skin. Do you have a tattoo which incorporates your passion for outdoors on it?

Mosquito Repellents that will keep away even the most stubborn Mozzies

We all know this, Mosquitoes are a pain in the ass. There are no if’s or but’s about it, they suck (pun intended). If they aren’t swarming you when you are hanging out having a cool beverage while fishing, then they are attacking you while you are just about to go to sleep. Worst of all they seem to always hover above your head for minutes at a time before flying into your ear at which point you release your inner ninja and try chop them up in half while in mid air.

You wake up in the morning with what seems like hundreds of bumps and lumps all over your body. At times making you think “how did they manage to even bite me there”.

Well It’s time for us humans to stand up to them pesky little mosquitoes and show them who is boss.

Below you will find some of the most radical, most effective and even at times crazy ways to show those little F…liers who is boss.

Mosquito repellents

So there are many types of repellents, some that are commercially made and others that are natural. At the moment DEET (diethyl-meta-toluamide) which was invented by the US army is the most powerful man made mosquito repellent available on the market.

There have been recent studies that state that prolonged use of DEET can cause brain cells to die in animals.

In saying that why use it when there are so many natural alternatives. And with that let me introduce to you the top 3 Natural mosquito repellents you can make up yourself right away.

1. CatnipMosquito repellent #mendooutdoors

Love cats? Yeah I thought so, well believe it or not catnip is super powerful when it comes to repelling mosquito’s. In fact in comparison to DEET it is actually x10 more powerful. All you have to do is rub the Catnip oil on your skin and viola the mozzie’s go away and to make things even better, cats will absolutely adore you. Meow (image will take you to Amazon)

2. Neem Oil
Mosquito repellent #mendooutdoorsAnother powerful mosquito repellent which is again more powerful than DEET. It’s as if DEET isn’t to crash hot after all. Well either way this affordable oil is not only good at keeping mosquito’s away, it is also really good for your skin. Look more beautiful and keep mozzies away… How can you go wrong with that sort of a combination.

3. Soy Bean Oil

Mosquito repellent #mendooutdoors

I Haven’t heard much about soy bean oil before besides it being just as effective as DEET at repelling mosquito’s. After some additional research I also found out that soybean oil is also really good at moisturizing your skin and for the more hairy kind of people it can even help with slowing down hair growth. So keep that away from your beards at all times fellas.

Either way there are plenty of amazing products out there that are not only 100% natural but also have multiple benefits. There is really no need to test out the if DEET actually does kill brain cells with products like these. Best of all they all seem to be around the same price as a majority of the mosquito repellents out there so really there is nothing to lose here.

If you enjoyed this post make sure to share it and comment below if you have any mosquito repellents that you know are even more powerful than the ones I mentioned.

Thanks for reading

Camping games that will impress everyone at camp

Camping games are probably one of the best ways to get family and friends to grow closer when going away on camping trips. Not only do you interact with one another, you also laugh and have fun, afterwards they provide hours of discussion and are usually free or use the items that you have on hand already anyways. Below you will find the ultimate list of camping games that I use as an outdoor instructor on a regular basis and find them to be very successful at getting the groups energy levels up.

Camping Games

1. Camouflage

One of my all time favorites. Camouflage has a bit of hide and seek, running and strategy incorporated into it. It’s a fantastic way to get everyone excited and having fun.

Find an area that is full of hiding spots. For example tall trees, downed trees, shrubs and so on. Avoid places where there is water, or prickly bushes.
Round 1 You will require a person that will be IT. This persons role will be to stand in a central location and call out “Camouflage”. Once called they will close their eyes and count down from 20. Loud enough so that everyone can hear.

When camouflage is called the remaining participants run and hide where ever possible.

Once the 20 seconds has been counted down the person that is “it” opens their eyes and begins searching for everyone in the forest. This person is only aloud to move as far as they can lunge while keeping one foot on the position they began the game from.

Once someone is spotted the person that is “it” needs to describe the person that they see and their hiding spot. Once found out the participant that was hiding is out of the game.
Round 2 When the person that is “it” can no longer find any more people that are hiding they call out “food and water” and begin counting down from 15 with their eyes closed.

At this moment everyone that was hiding needs to run in and tag the person that is “it” and run back to a hiding spot.  Again after 15 seconds the person that is”it” opens their eyes and searches for the remaining participants.
Round 3 Person that is “it” calls out “food and water” and begins counting down from 10 with their eyes closed. The remaining people run in and tag the person that is “it” and find a hiding spot.

After 10 seconds the person that is “it” opens their eyes and again searches for the people that are remaining.
Winner Person that is “it” calls out “food and water” and begins counting down from 5 with their eyes open this time. The remaining people need to run in and tag the person that is “it”. The person that is first to tag the person in the middle wins.

2. Chubby Bunny

A campfire would not be complete without marshmallows, so you should have several to spare for this kid-friendly camping game. Each player has to place a marshmallow in their mouth and say, “Chubby Bunny.” Once everyone says it well, they all have to put another marshmallow in their mouth. The person who can fit the most marshmallows in their mouth and still say, “Chubby Bunny” wins. (For safety reasons, use small marshmallows.)

3. Amoeba Tag

Tag games are always a lot of fun, this one in particular is fantastic as it incorporates team work into it and gets everyone running around.

To start the game you need to designate an area where everyone can run around in. You will also require 2 people that will be “it”.  These 2 will interlock their arms. They will now chase after everyone and when someone gets tagged they join on and interlock their arms with the people that are “it”. The game continues until everyone is tagged.

4. Guess What?

This game is super simple and best of all it allows for everyone to be very creative and can provide hours upon hours of fun.

So the basic idea is that someone comes up with an idea in their head, and then acts it out in front of everyone. The rest of the people who are observing the person acting need to guess what he/she is doing.

5. Human knot

This game is great because it incorporates fun, team work and strategy. groups of 5-9 work best, any more makes the game almost impossible to play.

To start you will require everyone to stand shoulder to shoulder in a circle formation facing inwards.

Next you will get everyone to reach out with their right hand and grab someone else’s right hand. Make sure to specify that you cannot grab the hands of the people that are right next to you.

Followed by everyone’s left hand doing the same.

After that you walk away and let everyone untangle themselves.

For added challenge you can break up the group into multiple teams and get them to race one another.

6.  Count Off

This is a great game to play around the fire. There are no moving parts and it involves the whole group. It incorporates fun and strategy. The idea behind the game is to get everyone to count to 20. Seems simple but there are a few rules that make it a little bit more difficult.

Get everyone sitting in a circle. While in the circle there cannot be any pre-planning of who will count off.

Next you get everyone to count off, but they cannot count around the circle, they also can’t give each other signals and if 2 people count off at the same time they need to start again.

Once the game is finished time them to see how long it takes them to do it again.

7. Crawling line up

Get  2 – 4  groups lined up across from one another. Then have them lay down and the idea behind the game is to get everyone to crawl their way to the other side and line up again. As everyone begins crawling they instantly become an obstacle for the other team. So they have to find a way around them, either over the top, underneath or to the side. It’s a fun filled game and best of all it doesn’t take to long to play.

These are just some camping games that you can play in the wilderness. By introducing games like this you will find that the group of people become more open and have a lot more fun. There are plenty more out there and if you have any suggestions on games I should include in the next list please add them to the comments below. Additionally if you liked this article please like and share it.

Thank you

Show the Cold who"s Boss using these simple techniques to warm yourself up

“I went camping and it was great, it’s just I was really cold.” A sentence many campers mention at least once during their outdoor careers. Let’s face it, once we are outdoors we are subject to the mercy of nature and at times nature just doesn’t want us to enjoy ourselves. Luckily for us these days we have ways and technology which enable us to endure even the coldest climates.
Here are some simple yet effective ways to warm yourself up.

1. Layers – If you have clothes, then layer up. The more layers you have the more air will get trapped and heated up around your body. This in turn will make you feel toasty and will help you stay warm even at night.
2. No Cotton – Cotton has it’s place, but it’s not in the outdoors. The reason being is that cotton holds moisture, takes a while to dry and draws heat away from your body. It might feel nice but if you are planning on staying warm think of grabbing yourself synthetic materials or best of all wool. Especially Merino Wool. Wool not only keeps you warm, it dries quickly and has a wicking effect which draws moisture away from your body. Best of all it is easy to clean and does not smell.

3. Go to the toilet before sleep – Not only is it a pain to wake up halfway through the night and climb out of a warm sleeping bag to go for a pee but also if you are holding it in your body is exerting energy to keep the urine at body temperature. This energy could have otherwise been used to warm up the rest of you body
4. Get a barrier between yourself and the ground – While sleeping you will be in contact with the ground which is one of the major ways you loose heat during the night. If you can get a mattress or even a layer of vegetation (grass) you will save a lot of energy which will be used at warming the rest of your body up. I had the opportunity to use a few inflatable mattresses in my time and swear by the Exped. Comfortable, easy to store and insulated. Click the image for more information and to buy (link goes to Amazon).

Exped Mat
5. Do simple exercises in your sleeping bag – There are 2 main types of sleeping bags, one are down (feathers) and the other are synthetic. Although they are both meant to keep you warm at night time they have 2 very different specific uses. In saying that a really good way to get warm in either one is to raise your body temperature through some movement in the sleeping bag. This will store the energy inside the bag and warm you up.  Exercises such as push ups, crunches will do the job just fine.
6. Fill up a water bottle with hot water – One of the simplest and most effective ways to get your sleeping bag nice and warm is to get a hot water bottle and place it inside the bag with you. This will raise the temperature inside the bag and make you feel nice and warm. Before attempting this make sure that your bottle can withstand hot water. I always recommend the Nalgene as it’s one of the most robust bottles you can take out with you camping.

7 Advanced Navigation Techniques which will turn you into a Navigation Master

Walking through a forest, bush, jungle even through sand dunes can get confusing at times. If you don’t have a GPS or signal for the GPS then you are most likely going to find yourself lost in no time.

This is when you will realize that a map and a compass can be your best friend. This post is not about using the Map and Compass but about Advanced Navigation techniques you can use in conjunction with those instruments.

So lets start of with the most simple of these techniques:

1. Handrailing: The Idea behind Handrailing is to walk along an object on the map, such as a road, river, train line, tracks. In this way the navigator can use this feature to guide them from point to point more quickly.

Handrailing

2. Knoll Hopping: A method of navigating whereby the navigator will travel from peak to peak so as to maintain high ground and ease of travel. Using this technique you can easily determine where you are on the map as you are navigating from highest point to highest point

Knoll Hopping

3. Catching Feature: Determine something that is very easy to recognize along the route that you are heading. This could be a road, lake, river, track etc. Once you get to it you know if you have either gone to far or are heading in the right direction.

Catching Feature

4. Aiming off: Just like a catching feature but instead you aim to the left or right of your intended target by 40-90yards (50-100m). This is especially useful if you have 2 rivers meeting up. Once you reach your target you just turn left or right and follow the river to the correct destination.

Aiming Off

5. Pacing: Its a simple estimate of the distance you have traveled by counting your steps. Before you go out into the forest, establish how much 100yards (or 100m) is and then count how many steps it will take you to walk the 100yards. Make sure that you aren’t trying to get the longest possible steps but normal steps. To get a better reading walk back and forth a few times. Once you figure out the number and go into the forest you count the number of steps you made in a certain direction. To keep track of how many yards (m) you have walked pick up a leaf every 100 yards so as to count how many hundreds of yards you walked.

Pacing

6. Walking on a bearing: Take your compass point it in the direction you are intending to walk towards, turn the dial with degrees on it so that the orienting arrow houses the Magnetic Needle and add or subtract the magnetic deviation (check out on your map to find out what the Deviation is) . Once you do that walk towards your destination making sure that you continuously keep the magnetic needle in the housing of the orienting arrow.

 Walking on a Bearing

7. Boxing: If you are walking on your bearing and come across an obstacle (e.g. large boulder, cliff face) which you cannot walk through or climb over then you will have to walk around it. Only thing is that you will lose your bearing quite quickly. So to overcome this problem you turn 90 degrees to the left or right. Then Pace out the amount of steps it will take for you to walk around the object. Turn 90 degrees back towards the direction you are heading once its easy for you to pass the obstacle. Walk to the end of the obstacle staying on the bearing. Next turn back 90 degrees towards your original bearing and pace out the steps you counted when you first went around the obstacle. Finally when you reach the final step turn back 90 degrees onto your original bearing.

Boxing

These Techniques can get confusing at times, specially when you are in the jungle. If you practice these Advanced Navigation Techinques you will find that each time you will get better and better at doing them and you will never require a GPS while camping again.

Purify water like a mad scientist at your next camp using these awesome Water filtration techniques

Lets get things straight, water is a necessity and when you go camping it is 100% important to stay hydrated at all times. Unfortunately sometimes the water is not of the best quality and if drunk could cause crazy D’z and V’s (diarrhea and vomiting). But don’t you worry, there are ways you can filter water right in front of your eyes so that they are nice and safe for everyone’s consumption.

Firstly there are a few ways you can filter water.

1. Chemicals- Chemicals such as Chlorine and Iodine have been used in water purification for years. They do work but one downside to them is in large quantities they begin to become bad for your health. The upside to these is that you can use it in any water making it safe to drink, they weight nothing and are fairly cheap.

2. Filters- Filters come in all different shapes and sizes. Some are more effective then others and obviously the more you pay for them the more effective they can become.  As a general rule they have to comply to a standard and remove 99.99% of all pollutants in the water. The upside to using filters is that they usually make water safe to drink rapidly, use no chemicals and can be reused for quite some time. The downside to these is that they can be bulky, heavy and expensive.

3. UV light – These days you can buy UV filters which you place into a bottle of water, switch it on and then wait 60 seconds for it to work its magic. These are very effective but expensive. Another way to filter water is to filter water through a shirt first to get rid of all the larger particles and then place it out in the sun in clear plastic bottle. By leaving it in the sun for approximately 8 hours you will get the sun to do all the work for you. This way is actually advised for 3rd world countries in the middle of a disaster event. Obviously the major downside is that you have to have water standing around for 8 hours. But if you are really in need of water and have no other options this will work just right.

4. Boiling water – is by far the oldest and most effective way to filter water. Reason being is that most if not all bacteria and viruses cannot survive in such high temperatures. Boiling water although good is not used as often these days because it takes time to boil the water and then cool it down. Most people don’t like drinking hot water on hot days and you have to carry a fire kit and fuel. On the other hand you most likely would carry a fire kit (check out my list of 7 fire starters by following this link) and you would already consider it in your packing. So if you work it into your daily routine and boil some water before going to sleep then it will be perfect for the next day.

Some products that you should look into if you are thinking of buying something before your next camp.

1. The Sawyer Mini

sawyer mini

It’s a small, super affordable lightweight filter which until recently I never knew nothing about. They say it will last me approximately 100,000 gallons which would mean a lifetime but I believe that I probably will replace it ever 5-10 years depending on how much I use it. Either way for the price that it’s going at I cant see why not. For more information and to buy the Sawyer Mini click the image(goes to Amazon).

2. Aquamira

Aquamira

If you don’t mind chemicals and love the simplicity and ease of use then you can’t go past Aquamira Water Treatment drops. Simply use a drop leave it to do its work for approximately 15-30 min and you are good to go. I prefer Chlorine over Iodine because it tastes much better. For more information and to buy Aquamira click on the image(goes to Amazon)

3. SteriPen

Steripen
I’d say this would have to be the fastest way to purify a bottle of water. Most of them say 60 seconds and you’re good to drink it. It’s lightweight chemical free and reusable. If I didn’t purchase a Sawyer Mini I would definitely look at getting one of these. For more information and to buy a SteriPen click on the image (goes to Amazon)

Fire Starters that will make you a Fire God at your next Camp

Nothing better than arriving at your camp, setting up and finishing off the day with a roaring hot fire complimented by marshmallows and beers. Unfortunately, sometimes it can get really difficult to light a fire because the wood could be wet or there could also be a possibility that you are setting up a fire in the rain. For all those situations its good to have a backup plan in the form of Fire Starters.

Check out the tips below and leave your suggestions in the comments below:

7 Fire Starters

1. Waxed Cardboard (waxxy)

My favourite type of fire starter would have to be a waxed cardboard box or at least small strips of it. Its lightweight burns really well takes up no space and can be thrown into your bag just as it is. Best of all you can find them everywhere and can pick one up for free.

2. Vaseline covered cotton balls

A simple yet effective way to get a fire started is to grab a few 100% cotton balls and soak them in Vaseline. An easy way to achieve this is to warm up the Vaseline and pour it over the cotton balls. Wrap them up in a bag afterwards to make sure they don’t smear your pack.

3.  Lint From your Dryer

If you have a dryer at home then you are set with yet another great fire starter. Lint is super dry, lightweight and burns like crazy. Best of all its nice and easy and free with every couple dry loads of clothing.

4. Coal wrapped up in Egg Cartons

Coal is not really a fire starter, but if you do light it up then it becomes quite difficult to put out. By wrapping it up with an egg carton you have the initial fuel (cardboard) to get it burning.

5. Pine cones covered in Wax

If you go into a forest you are most likely going to come across a pine cone sooner or later. They burn fairly well on their own but once you cover it with some wax you can get it burning for a fairly long time. If you can pick up some pine needles as well. They not only burn easily but give off a nice aroma.

6.Stuffed Toilet Paper Rolls

Next time you finish a roll of toilet paper grab the inner tube and fill it with some paper. It’s a nice and easy way to start a fire. As an additional tip you could also fill the tube with the fire starting gear. This could include a flint, matches, lighter, some Vaseline coated cotton balls. When you are ready to start the fire, you pull it out of your pack, look like a pro and start a roaring fire.

7. Pencil Sharpener

Obviously, this is not a fire starter but the reason why it is included in the list of top 7 fire starters is because by shaving some wood pieces from a stick they instantly become awesome kindling. Additionally, the sharpener is lightweight, small, reusable and super cheap.

1. Create your own Lantern

Pick up any see-through liquid container (empty or full of liquid), strap your head torch or phone to it, light it up on and voila, you have just created a lantern which will scatter light throughout your campsite. Colourful containers can also be used. They will give your campsite and interesting mood.

Nothing more annoying than returning back to your campsite to find that you are covered in these nasty little insects. Luckily for you, a simple mixture of 1 parts tea tree oil to 2 parts water should help keep the ticks away.

6. Estimate how much time you have before sunset

A simple technique to determine an approximate amount of sunlight before nightfall is in the palm of your hands. When you outstretch your arm, close your fingers and place it between the sun and the horizon it will give you a simple estimate. Each finger being 15 min. This is perfect because it helps you determine if you have enough time to set up camp in the daylight or if you will require to get the camp lantern out.

7. Waxed cardboard fire starters (waxxy)

There are many types of fire starters available, but if you are looking for a free, lightweight, and slow-burning fire starter you can’t go past the Waxed cardboard. Cut up a waxed cardboard into strips and pack in a waterproof container. When its time to use it, just light it up and it should give you enough fuel to get your fire going.

8. Para-chord

A rope is by far the most versatile camping tool out there. Using rope you can create other tools, erect a shelter, build traps… The list goes on and on. Para-chord is a rope, just thin, lightweight and super strong. You could easily carry 10m and barely even notice it in your backpack.

9. Lable tent pole connections

Putting together a tent can be a daunting task at times, but you can make it a little bit easier but labelling the tent pole connections with a matching numeral or coloured tape/marker.

10. Burn leftovers

It might seem kind of obvious, but once you are done with your food and the fire is still red hot, throw those leftovers on the fire to dispose of them. It will save you having to carry around any waste. But make sure to take with you things that don’t burn completely, such as bones.

11. Take Umbrella’s

Yes, they can take up room in your bag and add weight, but they are actually very useful, not just in the rain. You can use an umbrella during the super hot days to protect yourself from the sun. Also, you can set your tent up out of the rain thanks to an umbrella. Definitely, consider grabbing one with you next time you go camping or hiking

12. Dig yourself a bed

If you are considering sleeping on the ground, make sure to dig out small depressions in the ground for your shoulder and hips to allow for more comfort. Additionally, you can dig a little bit extra and fill the depressions with leaves and grass to soften the ground.

13. Eat before you sleep

In most cases, I stay away from food before sleep as it makes for a better nights rest, but on cold nights it is a good idea to sometimes snack on something to keep the metabolism working and keep yourself warm. A simple snack will do the trick. Additionally, drink water as you might be dehydrated and your body doesn’t run as efficiently if it’s dehydrated.
