Two Snowboarders were on their way out on piste, one said, “Where did you get your new snowboard?”

The second snowboarder replied

“Well, I was snowboarding along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman came up on this snowboard. She unclipped it from her bindings and threw it to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.”

The second snowboarder nodded approvingly

“Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn’t have fit”

First time snowboarding? You need to read this

Love snowboarding but still have plenty of questions that you need answering before you can devote your life to hitting up the slopes and fresh pow.

Well then check this mega dump of questions that have been sourced from scouring the web so that today, you have the opportunity to learn as much as you possibly can about this amazing activity.

Who invented snowboarding?

The first snowboard was invented by Gunnar Burgeson, Harvey Bugerson, and Vern Wicklund when they attached two planks together, used a rope for steering and a tie down for their boots. After that, it took almost 30 years before the next person tried creating something similar.

That person was a young surf freak and now legend by the name of Sherman Poppen who was dreaming about surfing the magical pow of the Rockies. So he decided to build his first prototype which consisted of tying together two 1,20m long plastic planks: otherwise, know as two kids skis. He attached a rope to enable him to steer and his clever wife gave the contraption the name ‘Snurfing’ which combined the two words ‘Snow’ and ‘Surfing’

When was snowboarding invented?

-The first snowboard was brought into reality in the year of 1939.

-Snurfing became a reality in 1965 and sold over a million boards within 10 years

-In 1977, Jake Burton added Ski Bindings to flexible wooden plants (also the year Burton was born, the leading company in snowboard manufacture in the world)

What is snowboarding
thoughtco.com

What is snowboarding?

Snowboarding is a recreational activity that involves sliding down a snow-covered slope while having a snowboard attached to a rider’s feet. These days snowboarding is well known for its extreme jump video compilations and crazy tricks as well

Is snowboarding a sport?

Depends on what you consider sport. If breaking a sweat means sport than Snowboarding is definitely a sport, in addition, it is also considered in the Winter Paralympics and Winter Olympics.

Benefits of snowboarding?

Besides being super fun, some of the main benefits of snowboarding are, improving your balance, Aerobic Exercise, endurance building and Calorie Burner. Let’s face it, sliding down a mountain at blistering speeds, weaving between trees and pulling tricks not only will burn fat as you are literally exercising your ass off but also will greatly improve your balance.

A good indicator that it is a decent exercise is that at the end of a day of snowboarding you are bound to feel every muscle in your body as it’s begging for a cold beer and a chill session around the fire.

Snowboarding calories Snowboarding calories

While snowboarding you can lose upwards of 450 calories per hour. This is very dependent on how hard you decide to go down the hill and also if you plan on doing tricks. Needless to say, do an hour of snowboarding and you can easily drink 3 cold beers which average about 154 calories each. Do another few more hours and you can get royally sloshed without putting on weight.

Disclaimer: Here at Mendooutdoors we don’t advise you to get blindly wasted, in fact, we recommend drinking in moderation. But let’s face it you probably still will get wasted.

So if I snowboard for 3 hours I can technically drink 9 beers without putting on calories... I love snowboarding #snowboarding #beer Click To Tweet

Snowboard slang/ Snowboarding terms

  • Shreddin’ The Gnar – This pretty much means “We’re going snowboarding.”

  • Shreddin’/Ridin’/Cruisin’ –  All these words mean one thing ‘Going down the hill’

  • Pow – Pow is short for powder. So when it snows you say “fresh pow”

  • Kicker/Booter – Names for jumps

  • Hittin’ – Use this whenever you are pulling a trick off of something. Like a rail, jump etc.

  • Stomp – Use this term when you pull off a trick and manage to land it.

  • Bail – This term means you didn’t pull off the trick.

  • Toe/Heel Drag – this is a technical term used for when the toes or heels of your boot hang over the toe or heel edges. This messes with your carving.

  • Cut – When you do a hard turn on your toe’s or your heel

  • Carving – This word is used when you turn

  • First Tracks – Like the name suggests, you leave the first tracks on the mountain. Meaning you are the first one up there to shred

  • Tearin’ It Up – When you absolutely destroy the mountain because of your awesome skills

  • Chatter – when the board shakes because of the rough terrain. Usually occurs when riding on an edge

Is snowboarding hard
snowboardsteez.com

 Is snowboarding hard?

Like with any sport, snowboarding has the potential to be hard. There are a few days where you have to really dig your heels in and practice. During these first few days, you might find yourself getting absolutely brutalized due to the fact that you fall over a lot, trying to get your balance.

If you use the simple tricks outlined in this article (Click here to find out how to fall in the snow) you will learn the correct way to fall to prevent any major injuries.

Also just like any other sports you most likely wont be able to pick it up first go and shred the mountain, but as with everything, the more you practice the better you will get. The hardest part is the learning curve at the beginning.

Once you learn how to stand up, keep your balance and stop, you will be on your way to making the slopes your bitch.

Just don’t give up as it really is a lot of fun.

Is snowboarding dangerous?

If you are heading down a hill at 25 to 35 miles an hour and crash into something, you will most likely get injured. That is why it’s important to learn the basics first which are standing up, keeping your balance and learning how to stop.

My recommendation would always be to get an instructor at first, who will get you up to speed much faster than if you tried everything on your own.

Also if you are stubborn and dont want to learn from someone, then stick to the very basic slopes at first and work your way up from there.

Majority of injuries are of the wrists, shoulders and collar bones but there have been worse incidents as well.

But if you stick to the basics at first you will have a really good time and as you become more proficient you will also feel more confident hitting up the bigger slopes.

How to Build an Igloo and look like a Pro doing so

Winter is right upon us and the only thing that really comes to our mind is ‘How to build an igloo?’

I’m back answering the questions that actually really matter, because let’s face it, if I don’t who will.

How to build an Igloo
instructables.com

So the snow has fallen around you, you have inches upon inches of fresh snow and the only thing you want to figure out is how you can use the snow at hand and build your very own Igloo.

Not only is it fantastic for the kids, but let’s face it, it’s probably every single adult’s dream to build and be inside of an igloo.

I know for me it was and I also know that it is a really fun experience.

So let’s get right into:

How to build an Igloo

What you will need

  • A saw

  • String

  • Shovel

What do do

– Find a place with plentiful snow and dig a circle. You can use a string connected to a stick and place it in the center of your circle. Then use the other end of the string to help trace the circle shape. Don’t go to overboard with the size as it will take quite some time to build an igloo on your own.

How to build an Igloo
thewildsmithberrys.com

– Now dig down, not all the way, just enough to get rid of the top layer of snow and also to create the shape. You will be using the remainder of the snow also as snow blocks to build your igloo.

– To make it easier for yourself dig in only one spot inside the circle all the way to the ground. This will make it possible for you to be able to stand up and cut the blocks out.

– Once you cut the blocks and stack them around the outside of the igloo, attach the string in the center on the ground. The string will be a guide for you to know how to slope the igloo

– Now stack the first layer of bricks, constantly using the string as a guide to how to slope the blocks. Use the saw to carve away at the blocks. When you complete a full circle, make sure to have a larger brick as this will become the anchor for the next layer.

– Continue building up the igloo from the inside, and always make sure to use the string as a guide and the saw to angle to bricks in the right direction.

– Once you run out of snow bricks you will have to find some more, to get on the outside of the igloo, build a tunnel out below your wall. Make sure that the snow doesn’t collapse on itself.

– Once out make sure to place wedges in between the layers so that it strengthens the structure and get more snow blocks.

– Now continue building the rest of the igloo and once complete ad a cap over the top. A piece of snow that is bigger than the hole itself.

– Place wedges in between the layers, lay more snow on top, just don’t put to much pressure on the structure and viola. Your igloo is built.

Building the entrance – How to build an Igloo

– Now with the entrance, you can go for the standard build and lay 2 large pieces of snow blocks against each other and then angle the bricks with the saw, but you can also make twists and turns in the igloo to keep the warmth in better.

Finally, the best thing about an Igloo is that you need minimal tools to build one and it can keep you and your loved ones warm during the night.

7 Winter facts that will blow your mind

Ok, so we all know that winter is an amazing time of year. During winter you get colder and shorter days and in the Northern hemisphere, you can expect Santa to arrive during this period.

But have you ever wondered how much salt is used on US roads? Or why there are different sized snowflakes? Well with these 7 winter facts you are about to find out and be able to use them in your next trivia night.

7 Winter Facts

7 Winter Facts - Aomori City
i.pinimg.com

#1 The snowiest city on earth is in…. Japan

Aomori City in northern Japan receives approximately 312 inches or 26 feet of snow each year. Some also say that the snow in Japan is the best in the world, known for its fluffiness and obviously huge amounts. If you had that much snowfall what would you build?

#2 Ingenious ways to rid the snow

So we spoke of Aomori city having the most snow in the world, but what happens when a place like that has too much and has to think of ways to rid the snow. One way is to dump it in parking lots and open fields and let nature run its course, melting it as the temperatures rise.

Another is dumping it into the ocean. Probably not the best thing to do as it could have some complications with marine life and so on. but besides those two, there is also a huge, diesel-guzzling kettle on wheels that spills hot water on the snow and melts it right in front of your eyes. Pretty cool in my opinion.

#3 Salt anyone?

The US alone uses 22 million tons of salt on the roads to make them safer. That’s literally a lot

#4 I got the need for speed

Snowflakes fall at a speed of 1 to 6 feet per second. So its very dependant on the shape of the snowflake, big pieces are more likely to float then small pellet shaped ones which plummet down to earth fast.

Which brings me to a question, In a vacuum what will drop faster, a feather or a kilo of lead? Type your answer in the comments below

7 Winter Facts - Building a snowman
momtastic.com

#5 Do you want to build a snowman?

The best time to build a snowman, igloo, or just have a plain old snowball fight is when you have a wetter type of snow. Something you probably knew before but did you know the perfect ratio is 5 parts water to 1 part snow. Yep, kinda accurate.

If you are planning on spending a long time outdoors building an igloo or just having a plain snowball fight, check out these articles on how to get plenty of energy and stay warm outside.

#6 Work on your winter tan

So as weird as it may seem, during winter or the 3rd of January, planet earth is closest to the sun. Which in turn confirms that the earth is flat… Not

Yep, in fact, we are approximately  3.1million miles closer to the earth than on July the 5th which is the time we are the furthest away.

#7 If you don’t see it, you tend to enjoy it more, right?

Supposedly men rated pictures of women’s breasts and bodies as more attractive in the winter months, while they rated pictures of women’s faces the same. Reason being is that we don"t see them as often during the winter month so we… Click To Tweet

How to Stay Warm in Winter While outside

Winter = Cold and nothing is worse than having to cut a session on the slopes short because you are feeling chilly. If only you knew of a way on how to stay warm in winter.

Well, most likely you already do, but just in case you forgot here are 7 amazing ways to beat the chill and heat yourself up so you can enjoy the snow even more.

How to stay warm in Winter

How to stay warm in winter
efficientair.com.au

#1 Layer up

Lots of people think that buying the warmest jacket out there is the best way to stay warm. Obviously, it will be nice but in most cases, you will also find that jackets like that are quite bulky.

So instead consider layering up.  1 or 2 shirts, 2 jumpers, and a windproof jacket can keep your upper body nice and toasty. This is because warm air gets caught in between the layers.

Best of all if you start getting too hot while enjoying the snow you can take a layer or 2 off and continue on with your day.

#2 Wear a beanie

Or something similar to a beanie.  Anything to put over your head. After all a huge portion of warm escapes from your noggin.

#3 Wear waterproof gloves and shoes

Seriously, nothing worse than walking around in wet shoes, or just as bad putting your hands into wet gloves. Get waterproof shoes and gloves so that you can play around in the pow but not have to worry about the consequences.

Best thing is that these days you can buy waterproof sprays that will really put a nice layer on top of your gear and keep everything nice and dry.

How to stay warn in winter - Hand Warmers
trekkinn.com

#4 Hand warmers

Nothing better than putting your hands into your pockets and playing with a warm sack. Hand warmers are fantastic and will defrost your fingers in no time. Click To Tweet

They consist of a few chemicals that when mixed together produce heat from the exothermic oxidation of iron when exposed to air. Pretty nifty, they last from 1-10 hours but give off the most heat within the first 2 hours.

But if your old school you can just warm your hands on your willy

#5 Eat food that give you high amounts of energy

Now food not only stops you from being hungry. It also gives you energy and heat. By eating a healthy meal before heading outdoors you are bound to have the energy to keep your body warm for longer.

You can also chow down on snacks while already out to sustain the energy. Click here to find out about 7 high energy foods that will keep you warm

How to stay warm in winter - Alcohol
todayifoundout.com

#6 Drink Water

Now it might seem like the last thing you want to do while outdoors but drinking water plays an essential role in keeping you warm. Seeing as we humans are mainly water, most of our inner process require it to work optimally. So when you start getting dehydrated you will also start to feel colder.

Seriously works amazingly

#7 Take a Shot

Now Russians know what they are doing when they swig down a bottle of spirits. It warms up your insides and makes you feel great. Just don’t overdo it and if you really want to swig that bottle down, make sure to do it at the end of the day after an amazing day out in the pow.

What are your thoughts on my list? Did I miss anything on how to stay warm in winter, If so put it in the comments below, and don’t forget to share and follow mendooutdoors on Facebook and Instagram

7 High Energy Foods to Warm you up During Winter

Now it’s kind of obvious that food is something that not only gives us plenty of energy but while our body breaks down the food it also creates heat.

In my opinion, heat is fantastic during winter. So here is a list of high energy foods that will warm you up but also give you plenty of energy to shred on the slopes

7 High Energy Foods to boost your shredding potential

High Energy Food - Sweet Potato
thespruce.com

1# Sweet Potatoes

These bad boys are not only delicious but are high in carbohydrates, Vitamin A and Vitamin C which will help you fight off midday fatigue. You can use these delicious orange bundles of joy instead of potatoes for mash or fries.

#2 Honey

This nectar from the gods has a really low glycemic index which means that it will slowly release energy after taking it in. Best of all it tastes amazing and you can mix it up with many of your favorite foods. Tea, cereal, lamb, more honey… you get the gist, you can use it on everything.

Beans - High energy foods
skinnyms.com

#3 Beans

“beans beans musical fruit, the more you eat, the more you toot” not only will these warm your belly but also warm the air around you. Fantastic as they have high amounts of protein and complex carbs which will give you plenty of energy. Additionally, you can mix them with most dishes, such a burrito, salad and also just scoop them out of the can and eat them like that.

#4 Egg

“A box without hinges, key, or lid, yet golden treasure inside is hid.” Golum. A delicious snack on the go, just boil it prior to heading out, keep it in a safe spot and whenever you are hungry chow down on one.

Eggs are great for giving you energy as they have the highest complete form of protein (30% of your daily requirements). Additionally, to that, they have amino acids which will help in rebuilding muscles after a massive day on the slopes. How do you like your eggs?

Salmon High Energy Foods
shopfreshseafood.com

5# Salmon

Super popular for its high amounts of Omega 3 and amazing taste, but lesser known for its high amounts of Protein, Vitamin B6, Niacin, and Riboflavin. In simple terms eat salmon for lots of energy.

6# Nuts

I always love having a mouthful of nuts, especially when a little salty, they tickle my taste buds and I know that they provide me with high amounts of protein. Hopefully, you caught my innuendo there 🙂 but besides that Nuts, especially Almonds are fantastic at keeping your energy levels flowing.

These tiny energy capsules have high amounts of protein, copper, manganese, and riboflavin. Coppen and Manganese are fantastic at breaking down toxins in the cells and Riboflavin aids in oxygen-based energy production.

Dark Chocolate - High Energy Foods
fitday.com

7# Dark Chocolate

For the sweet tooths out there that have trouble surviving a day without chocolate, now you have a reason to demolish a whole block to yourself. Perfect for a snack here and there it will not only provide you with energy but vitamin C. Just make sure you hit up the 70% cacao kind as the milky chocolate will just give you a sugar high.

With these High energy foods, you can not only keep yourself warm but also buzzing and shredding down the slopes all day. Best of all you can store them in your jacket (maybe besides the salmon and sweet potato) and pull them out when most needed.

Did you find this article helpful? Do you have high energy foods that you keep falling back to during winter? Then make sure to comment below and as always share this article with your buddies so that they can keep up with you as you shred all day on the slopes.

Jet ski - Bruno Jacob - Featured Profile

If you have the need for speed and pushing yourself to the limits then you will have an instant connection with Bruno (Bruno from Brazil) who is the vice-world champion IFWA 2016 in Jet ski Freeriding.

He has spent years training and now is the strongest representative from Brazil in the freeride category. He is a huge advocate for the sport and tries to get as many people interested in it by not only competing but also selling quality, affordable jet ski products of his own.

Sport runs through Bruno’s veins, that’s how he was born. Besides being on the jet ski he also does wakeboarding, surfing, going to the gym and stand-up paddling.  So without further a due let’s jump into the questions and learn more about this exceptional individual.

How old are you?

I’m 30 years old

Where were you born?

I was born in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Where do you live now?

Salvador, Bahia, Brazil

Bruno Jacob Jet ski

What outdoor activity do you do? Let us know a bit about it

I’m a professional jet ski Freerider or otherwise known as a motosurfer.

The freeride category on the jet ski began fifteen years ago. Basically, it’s a mixture of freestyle and jet ski surfing. Riders have to devise aerial maneuvers, such as backflips and use the waves as if they were ramps. The jet ski is like the bike or a board. The judges evaluate the difficulty and how precise someone is in a variety of maneuvers.

I started because my father loves motorsports and really pushed me into a few motorsports. When I got a chance to try out jet skiing I was hooked from the start.

Additionally, besides my father, my whole entire family have supported me along the way.

How did you get into the sport?

My father always loved motorsports and when I was 10 he put me into a go-kart. Unfortunately, at the time it didn’t work out very well. When I turned 15 my dad organized a Jet ski competition in my town which sparked my interest.

Not long after I got a jet ski as a gift and started practicing. In my first Bahian Championship, I came sixth overall. The following year, I went to the Brazilian and got second place amongst the “Rookies”.

I realized I had a talent and after that, I was hooked. I migrated to Freeriding which is the fastest growing category and since then I have won a few international titles.

All the trips are very important to me. Especially when I have fun with my friends around the world.

Bruno Jacob Jet ski

My favorite trick is the Scarecrow, that is a roll with the jet ski while not holding onto the bars with your hand’s and having one leg off and extended as well

My favorite gear is Fly Racing

My favorite location is Brazil. I train in Barra do Jacuípe, in the city of Camaçari, in Bahia.

In this town, there is a marina, where we also have a shop, in which we manufacture and sell jet-hulls, and have a jet ski school.

I’m the vice-world champion IFWA 2016. Additionally to that in my first year, I was runner-up “Rookie” in Brazil which in made me realize I had quite the talent in the sport.

All the trips are very important to me. Especially when I have fun with my friends around the world.

What are you striving towards in the future?

I wanna see that sport grow and grow more everywhere!

He might not have gotten into Go-karting but fortunately, he found his calling in Jet skiing where obviously he is excelling. We wish Bruno a bright future in the sport and if you are interested in connecting more with Bruno check out his pages below.

Toddlers that Shred up the Slopes

In most instances they might be annoying, slowly making their way down the mountains, obstructing everyone and crying when they fall over but there is something really cute about toddlers that strap on a set of ski’s and shred up the mountain.

Here is a look at some of the toddlers that start their skiing and snowboarding journeys early. Who knows with such an early start they might one day make it into the big leagues.

With dreams of snowboarding since I was a young lad, I am kind of envious of these young individuals who have gotten the chance to be pretty much born into it.

Not only is it a great sport, but in my opinion, it’s a great way for families to connect. Teaching the kids new tricks, letting them go crazy in the snow and giving them the necessary skills in snowboarding and skiing to become champions when they grow up.

Nice work to the parents for putting up with what I can imagine was hours of tears from the many knocks that the kids would have suffered.

But I think that there is one thing for sure. There is nothing worse than seeing a toddler shred better than yourself. Especially if you have put in the hard yards and got flogged a ton in the meantime.

What are your thoughts? are you a fan of children snowboarding past you like little pro’s? Have you got a child of your own that you would like to show off with?

Virtual Reality Allows Man To Go Skiing For The First Time In 32 Years. His reaction is really moving

Let’s not lie to ourselves, Virtual Reality (vr) is exciting and the moment you place the goggles on to your head you get transported to a new dimension.

For me, this is something I do for leisure but I never took into account other people and how they viewed it until now. The power of VR really comes through in the video below.

Gadda who suffers from cerebral palsy hasn’t hit up the slopes in over 30 years. What he considered fun back when he was 15 now was physically impossible for him to do.

But in today’s day and age, his condition doesn’t necessarily have to prevent him from letting his mind escape into a different reality.

By putting on the goggles he was able to not only skii but go to the burning man festival and immerse himself in experience.

Vr helps man skii again after 32 yearsThis made me think of all other possible ways this technology can be used.

Obviously for disabled people, but also for elderly who are in retirement homes, or are confined to beds.

It could be used in classrooms for new ways to teach children so that they can interact with their surroundings.

I mean the possibilities are endless and best of all as time progresses the experiences will be even more realistic.

What are your thoughts on VR? Have you had the opportunity to use them in the past? What was your experience like? comment below and also make sure to share this page with other.

Thomas Feurstein (Snowboarder) - Featured Profile

Today I have the pleasure of interviewing someone who absolutely shreds in a sport that I  love. This person is Thomas Feurstein otherwise known as Fuego and the sport is Snowboarding.

On top of that, he is a Professional stuntman who during his downtime engages in Skate-& Longboarding, Mountain-& Downhill biking, Hiking, Climbing. Real chill dude and has some great tips for beginners in the sport.

Tell us about yourself

In the year of 1991 I was born in Schruns (Montafon). Montafon is located in the snowy Austrian Alps, it was great to grow up here and I still enjoy living here. It‘s a natural playground for nature-loving adrenalin junkies.

After finishing at a business school in Bludenz I was ready to live my life as a professional snowboarder – since then my snowboard is always with me. Only in summertime does my board get a short rest.

I am using the snowless months to prepare and organize ideas for the winter and perform different stunts for tv and commercials.

What outdoor activity do you do?

Snowboarding, Skate-& Longboarding, Mountain-& Downhill biking, Hiking, Climbing

What’s your favorite trick?

Bs Air and Fs 360

What’s your favorite location and why?

Definitely Silvretta Montafon. I just really like the steep and easily accessible backcountry there and the gondola is only three walking minutes away from my home – that’s a big plus as well 🙂

What’s your most memorable moment?

The last few years snowboarding gave me so many good memories and positive feelings – hard to tell which one was the best, I was definitely hyped at those moments:

– 2nd place at my first Freeride World Tour contest

– Finishing my video project „Catch me if you can“ with a jump in a moving chairlift

– Riding straight out of a little avalanche

– Every time when fresh snow is coming

If someone would be interested in doing your sport, what would you recommend for them to do to get the most out of it?

Have fun while riding

stay motivated and just ride as much as you can! In the summertime, I would recommend doing some boardsports as well, for example, Skate/Longboarding, Surfing, Wakeboarding…

Snowboarding can be super exhausting, to keep your energy level high I recommend a good sleep the day before and healthy Vegan diet all year.

Anything else you would like to add?

Keep the mountains clean and enjoy riding 🙂 - Thomas Feustein (Fuego) #mendooutdoors #snowboarding #men Click To Tweet

Become a legendary bushcrafts man using these simple tips

During my time in the outdoors as an outdoor instructor I taught kids the basics they required to be able to survive in the bush. It gave me plenty of joy and reminded me of the first time when I lit up a fire using a simple flint.

The moment you ignite a fire is one of the biggest achievements you can have and makes you realize how life has become so complicated when everything you really need is already provided for us by nature.

So let’s wind back a few things, to the days where hanging out in the bush was how we survived and all we cared about was our next meal, shelter and most importantly staying warm.

Let’s focus on a little bit of bushcraft that is so rewarding and yet everyone can pick it up.

Here are the top things you need to learn that will make your next trip into the bush amazing.

Starting fires

Bushcraft Skills - Starting a fire
offthegridnews.com

Starting a fire is one of the best things you can do when going out into the bush, you are able to cook your food, boil some water, protect yourself from predators and also build up morale with it. Sometimes though it is really difficult to start a fire. One thing you can do before going out into the bush is to learn and familiarise yourself with what kind of tinder is best for igniting fires.

Additionally, you could take a few basic fire starters with you, here is a list I prepared earlier. 7 fire starters that will turn you in to a fire God at your next camp

Before you start a fire make sure you keep yourself and others safe. Clear an area around and above the fire so as to make sure it doesn’t spread out of control. If you have ignitable substances, make sure to keep them a few meters away for added security.

Finally, make sure there aren’t any trip hazards around the fire which could cause someone to trip and stumble into the fire. When you are out in the bush the nearest hospital could be hours away.

Collecting and filtrating water

Bushcraft skill - Filtrating water
adventure.howstuffworks.com

Most of us know that you can collect water from a river, lake, dam, and stream but did you know that in many instances drinking water from said sources can cause you to get ill. One of the worst things while being out in the bush is to get d’s and v’s (diarrhea and vomit). It could not only be dangerous to your health but also cause you to have to cancel your trip a lot sooner.

It is always important to filter the water before drinking.

A simple way to do that is by using what this planet has way to much of. Plastic bags. Fill it with layers of rocks, sand, and charcoal (which you can get after you made your fire) and let the water filter through the layers.

This will remove most of the nasty pathogens which can make you sick and also, it’s a great and simple project you can create as you are setting up your shelter.

Walking on a BearingLearn to navigate

Navigation is one of my favorite things while in the outdoors. In my opinion, it’s the key which opens up the whole world to you.

With a simple map and compass you can get into the most remote places, and when you do, it is such a sense of pride and achievement that it can really make you feel inhuman.

There are plenty of video’s on youtube which can teach you the basic’s but the only way you can really learn is to practice.

Even professional navigators can get it wrong at time’s, that is why you need to practice over and over in different terrains.

Learn to build simple shelters

After a day of collecting food, water and navigating it is amazing to get back to a shelter sit by the fire and eat and drink the spoils of your day. Best of all you don’t have to make anything fancy at first, but in saying that you have all the materials you could possibly need all around you in the bush.

Use timber for structure and the frame.

Use leaves, twigs, sticks and other ground foliage as thatching for your roof and bedding.

Use stones as a way to isolate your fire from the surroundings. Additionally, you can make cutting utensils with rocks

Make rope out of fibrous materials you have at hand. For example, grass, bark fiber, and palm fibers.

Stay Positive

Sometimes you might get hungry, other times the shelter you might build can fall apart, then the fire won’t start. This is all part of learning curve. As time progresses you will begin to get better and better at the simple tasks and in no time you will be able to do more challenging bushcrafting.

Till then make sure you stay high spirited and focus on the beauty of being out in nature, disconnected from technology and enjoying what this planet has to offer.

Have you done any bushcrafting? What was your favorite experience? Let us know in the comments below and as always make sure to share this article so others can get inspired to be outdoors.
